Curtis Pharmacy Opens in New Washington Location | Company
The new Curtis Pharmacy home is exactly what the doctor ordered.
The pharmacy opened on Monday at its new location, in the former Foodland store at 575 Henderson Ave. in Washington. It’s three-quarters of a mile upstream from its previous location – 869 Henderson, Canton Township.
Uphill is the key word for this movement. Canton’s location, near the Washington line, is at or below the Chartiers Creek flood line. The pharmacy experienced two floods in seven months – July 2017 and February 2018 – the second more serious occurrence.
“We didn’t have any supplies in advance after the flooding, just prescriptions, because the devices were so damaged,” said Erich Cushey, pharmacist and co-owner with his wife, Tina. They have a second location, the original Curtis Pharmacy, on Main Street in Claysville.
The conversion of the old Foodland, closed in December 2017, to a pharmacy took time. It started last summer and lasted almost five months. But the new Curtis is operational.
A blue sign with white lettering sits atop the entrance and the Canton store sign will be added, said Michelle Swarrow, director of pharmacy. As the interior buzzed with activity Wednesday morning, the parking lot was being paved, a project Swarrow said should be completed by evening.
Plans were originally for Curtis to share the old Foodland space with Countryside Deli, which wanted to open a grocery store there. But that didn’t happen, so the Cusheys are looking for a tenant to occupy more than 6,000 square feet.
The Curtis Pharmacy has a long tradition. It has been operating in Claysville for over 100 years, a multigenerational family business that has only had four owners.
